From the Pastor’s Study….

From the look of the retail stores, Valentine’s Day is here.  But much of what is celebrated as love is not truly love as God’s Word defines it.

Here is what the Apostle Paul told us in 1 Corinthians 13:4-6.

Love is patient,   Love doesn’t fly off the handle when our goals are blocked by the needs of others or their problems.

love is kind.   Love fights the temptation to be critical or judgmental.  Love speaks kindly and gently even in the midst of disagreements.

It does not envy,   Love seeks the best for others, and can rejoice when others advance before us or are blessed by God.

it does not boast,   Love boasts only of knowing Christ.  Yet love doesn’t shrink back for thanking a person for a job well-done.

it is not proud.  Godly love is humble and serves others.  It does not expect to be served but to serve as Jesus did.

It does not dishonor others,  Love is loyal and does not seek to do wrong in return even when wronged.

it is not self-seeking,   In other words love says “no” to self-centered inclinations; it refuses to be demanding and all about “self.”

it is not easily angered,   Love stays faithful to treating others with respect and grace, even when that probably will not be noticed or reciprocated.

it keeps no record of wrongs.   Love doesn’t keep lists of past wrongs, or mental ledger books of how you have been hurt by others.

Paul goes on to say:

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

I don’t know about you, but I have a long way to go in Biblical love.  Praise God that we have the indwelling Holy Spirit’s help us. Have a great rest of the week, and a blessed Valentine’s Day.

In Christ,

Pastor Bob
